THE DRUM OF THE SAMI SHAMAN II. Noaidi was the person who carried the magic drum, but there were many families who had drums in their homes. They kept them in hidden and safe places, and only used them when necessary to ask for protection or advice from the spirits and the gods. The Sami drum is known as the goavddis in the north and the gievrie in the south, and because it is such a tool of true spirituality, other cultures saw it as evil and a threat.Sami had to hide their drums when they were persecuted for their practices, the excuse is that they were instruments of the Devil but really it was an instrument to immerse oneself in a trance,to connect with oneself, with nature, with the spirits,to do divination rituals,to cure illnesses,to do ceremonies,to ask for protection...The attempt to impose Christianity on the Sami led to the prohibition of using the drum and all those found were burned. In some trials, the accused Sami tried to explain the true meaning of the drums, without success. One of the best known trials was the Anders Paulsen´s one, who was accused of witchcraft.Today only about 70 drums remain. Many Noaidi did not give up their drums and buried them in hidden places in the mountains,to protect them so that they would never be found and destroyed. Can you imagine the sadness of these people when they bury a part of themselves? It is sad that something so beautiful, important and so linked to a culture like the Sami drum is eradicated, annulled, that some people want it to be lost in time and forgotten, that it dies? I admire the people who have preserved this culture, who have listened to their ancestors, who have fought against fear and who have rescued tradition, the essence of who they are today and what they were in the past, the reason that makes them special,I admire that they have not been lost.Don't you think we should all do something like that?Don't let fear lose you, don't lose yourself...Pic by @shieldmaiden79
