... And as their bodies twisted and writhed in a hypnotic dance, magic was born, the source of desire...
Amulets had a very important place in the life of the ancient Celts. One of the most coveted amulets was the "snake egg". This amulet was born from the dance between several snakes. Pliny wrote in his writings that, between spring and early summer, the snakes coiled in a kind of nest, rubbing their bodies against each other, and with their saliva formed a foam that hardened and formed an egg-shaped crystal. Then, between hisses, they would throw the egg into the air. The druids said that this egg had to be caught in a cloak, in the air, before it touched the ground. Then the lucky one had to flee quickly, until he crossed a river or a lake, thus being safe from the snakes that were chasing him. The egg was as big as an apple, with a chequered cartilaginous layer. This amulet brought luck in court and facilitated access to kings. It was also said to protect against snakebite. In Wales and the Scottish Highlands 'snake stones', called "glain naidr", have been found in burial mounds.
It is fascinating to think that behind a wild and spontaneous act among these beautiful animals, something so strongly anchored in folklore was born even today. Lucky the one who has a "snake egg" in his possession.
