Vikings...there are so many buried secrets, so many hidden mysteries that will never be uncovered...Others have been found but we still don't know their story. The Skalmejen is one of those half-buried secrets. It's an instrument found in an excavation in a shipyard on Falster, an island in Denmark. The tube has 5 holes to place the fingers of the hand, but it is incomplete, as it isn't really a kind of flute. It's dated to the 10th-11th century. Some say that it may have been a kind of bagpipe, as another Skalmejen was found in Sweden with remains of leather attached to the end. This would be evidence that a leather bag was part of the instrument, and that at some point a mouthpiece was added to one end. Nowadays some replications are made of wood and horn. Be that as it may, it's exciting to imagine the ancient Vikings at ceremonies and festivals singing and playing unknown instruments like the skalmejen. It's good to imagine, sometimes is better not to know everything, not to reveal the mystery, and the secret stays like that, a secret...
