MAGIC STONES IN CELTIC RITUALS

There was the door to another world. What he had longed for was now before his eyes, and it was waiting for him...

Rituals of protection, magic and healing have their roots in ancient times. The Celts worshipped the elements of Nature, including stones. Some of their amulets were stones and crystals such as coral, white marble, amber, quartz...They were taken in powdered form as medicine, they carved figures that they wore around their necks... Many of them have been found in ancient tombs, and we know that they were objects of worship in some aspects of their culture, such as magic, luck, protection, war, communication with other worlds...

Some rocks were considered to be the abode of spirits. The ones with a hole in them were the most special. Maidens slid down the rock to get a lover, women who could not have children visited these rocks to get pregnant. In Ireland there are the so-called "beds of Diarmuid and Grainne". They are caves, crevices and nooks in the rocks, where the lovers Diarmuid and Grainne spent the nights during their escape. Many rocks with holes in them were the centre of healing and protection rituals, by passing the sick person through the hole. In many cases it was children who were born sick. These rites have a pre-Celtic origin, they were practised in many cultures and are reminiscent of a similar one but with a tree in which there was an indentation. Whatever the culture, whatever the time and whatever the motive...the worship and respect for the Elements, the Territory and the spirits has always been present...and must remain so.
