KUKSA, SÁMI CUP THAT KEEPS US CONNECTED TO NATURE

People say that a true nature lover should make his own kuksa...I think it´s a beautiful way to shape that connection with nature, every kuksa is different, and that makes them special!Kuksa is the most popular name, but in the Sámi people it´s known by other names like guksi or gohppu, kaasa in Swedish and kokse in Norwegian.Kuksa is the traditional Sámi cup,and one of the best known pieces of Sámi handicraft (Duodji). The traditional kuksa is handmade from birch wood, specifically from a birch burl (not easy to find). The shape of the kuksa is specially designed to be useful in nature, its rounded shape allows it to rest on any surface that is not flat (which is normal in the forest) without spilling the drink. The handle is at the same height as the top rim of the cup,and may have one or two holes and a leather strap for convenient carrying on escapades in the countryside.Hot and cold drinks can be drunk from the kuksa without danger of the wood cracking, but milk should never be poured into it.I´d love to sit on a tree trunk in the evening, and hold a kuksa in my hands and enjoy a hot tea, watching the sun go down while a cool breeze plays with my hair... If a kuksa is made by a true craftsman it will last a lifetime, it´s a slow and quiet process, and the birch wood will tell what the next step is.So,the craftsman just has to listen...I assure you that the process to make it is very beautiful and shows the link of that person with nature, reinforces that union and reminds us that we are just a small piece of something much bigger and important...Today my brother @fornleidh tells us how a real kuksa is made, visit his account, give him love and discover this wonder!!! Nice day
