JAW HARP, SCANDINAVIAN INSTRUMENT

Vikings knew that the simplest sound had the greatest effect. A small vibration resonated with their soul. One of the most commonly used instruments in ancient Scandinavia was the mouth harp or jaw harp. It's a simple instrument made of iron, steel, brass or bone. In many eastern countries there is also another version of this harp, made of whole piece of bamboo. But the Scandinavian and Western version is made of two pieces: an outer frame, and a central tongue or spike which is held by the outer frame. The oldest mouth harp found in Scandinavia was unearthed in Helgenæs, Denmark. It was buried in the ruins of a house. The mouth harp is placed by pressing on the teeth and producing the vibration of the central spike. There are different ways to play this small instrument and produce sounds and melodies. This is how different effects and sensations are achieved. It's a very simple instrument and I think that is why it has always been used by shamans, in rituals, and as an aid for meditation and introspection. The sound produced by the vibration of the central tongue is so primitive and deep that it awakens something inside us, something wild and ancient. Isn't that what music is all about? The ancient Vikings were not only dedicated to war, they also cultivated their spirit... Maybe we should do the same...
