HEL, UNDERWORLD NORSE GODDESS

Hel, in Old Norse means "hidden". They say Hel is the one who hides in the shadows, beautiful and heartbreaking, light and darkness, beginning and end. Daughter of the giantess Angrboða and Loki, Hel is the goddess of the Underworld. Along with her brothers Fenrir and Jörmunganðr, she was condemned by the Æsir and banished to Niflheim to rule Helheim. She is life and death and she shows herself to others in this way. Half of her body is alive, white and beautiful, the other half is dark, dead, rotten, bones are in sight. In her kingdom she welcomes the souls of those who don´t die with honor on the battlefield. She welcomes those who died of disease or old age (death of straw), murderers and those who don´t respect their oaths. Hel has a horse named Helhest that has only 3 legs, and she rides on him to the place where the dying welcome her to let themselves be carried by her hand. Her voice is soft, deep and calm, and she wears a dark colored cloak. Hel is not the one who condemns or punishes, she is the one who gives peace and justice. Hel shows us that death is part of life, she teaches us to accept it. She teaches us that darkness is part of light. She harbored Baldr and Höðr during the Ragnarök and thus guaranteed the beginning of a new cycle. She is the guardian and perhaps if you look into her darkness you can see how powerful she is, you can see that within that darkness the light shines brighter than ever, and that her true beauty is there...There are many artistic works of Hel, but I recommend you visit my brother @fornleidh profile to see a traditional carving of the goddess of the Underworld. A pleasure to collaborate with this text and accompany his amazing work.
